How to restore your TV after CleanYourTV

How to undo CleanYourTV and get your TV’s original home screen back, and what to do when a firmware update brings the ads back.

Keep the list you applied. With it, one command puts the TV back the way it was.

Restore your TV with one command

From the repository folder, with debugging on again and your TV’s IP address:

# Android TV
TV_HOST=192.168.1.50 tools/restore.sh examples/<your tv>/debloat.txt

# Google TV
TV_HOST=192.168.1.50 tools/restore.sh examples/<your tv>/debloat.txt com.google.android.apps.tv.launcherx

Before the first change, disable.sh writes a record of how the TV looked into ~/.cleanyourtv/ on your computer: which packages were enabled, which launcher owned Home and the animation settings. Restore replays that record, so a package you had disabled yourself stays disabled and Home goes back to the launcher that owned it.

Restore without a computer

If the TV is unreachable, open Settings → Apps on the TV, show system apps, and enable the packages again one by one. The stock launcher is the one to enable first.

Switch the home screen without restoring

Hold OK on the Settings button of the new launcher, choose Launcher settings, and open the default home option. Android’s home picker lets you choose the original launcher, as long as it is enabled. Some TVs have no home picker.

After a firmware update

An update installs over the cleaned-up system: listed packages come back, Home returns to the stock launcher and new preloaded apps may appear. Compare the TV with your list:

TV_HOST=192.168.1.50 tools/venv/bin/python -I tools/check.py examples/<your tv>/debloat.txt

It prints what drifted. Add --fix to switch Home back and disable the packages that returned. Lists that also disable the updater get no updates at all; to install one, re-enable the updater, update, run check.py --fix and disable it again.

Restore questions

Will a factory reset undo CleanYourTV?

Yes, a factory reset brings the TV back to stock, but you lose your apps and settings. The restore script is gentler: it re-enables only what the list disabled.

I lost the list I applied.

Use the same list from the repository again if you applied one unchanged. Otherwise re-enable packages from the TV’s Settings → Apps page (show system apps), or as a last resort factory reset.

Does restore remove the new launcher?

No. It stays installed. Remove it from the TV’s Settings → Apps if you want it gone.

A firmware update brought the ads back.

That is expected: an update installs over the cleaned-up system. Run tools/check.py with your list to see what changed and add --fix to put it back.
